In Word, you can select one of several units of measurement for the ruler. This is useful when you’re working on a document for someone who uses a different measurement system for margins, tabs, and so on. It’s an easy setting to change whenever you need to.
Switch over to the “File” tab on Word’s Ribbon.
Click the “Options” command on the sidebar.
In the Word Options window, select the “Advanced” category on the left.
On the right, scroll down to the “Display” section and then click the drop-down menu to the right of the “Show measurements in units of” entry.
On the drop-down menu, click the units you want to use.
And then click the “OK” button.
If your ruler is not displaying, switch to the “View” tab.
And then tick the “Ruler” checkbox there.
When you want to change back to your regular units of measurement, head back to the same setting in the Word Options window.

Using Convert function to convert one unit measurement to another unit measurement in Excel, it’s a little complicated.
Step 1: Enter the formula of =CONVERT(A1,'m','yd') in a blank cell, and press Enter key. In this case, we enter it in Cell E1. Then you will see the 212 meter is converted to 231.846 yard and fill the Cell E1.
Step 2: Select the Range of E1: G5, which contains same size as A1:C5.
Step 3: Click the Home > File > Down / Right.
Then you will see the unit measurement of all data in A1:C5 is converted to yard, and fill the E1:G5.
Note: In the formula, you must use the right shortening of measurements. For example, you can use the 'yd' but not the 'yard', 'lbm' but not the 'Pound mass', etc. You can find out the right shortenings in the following web page:

Displaying Rulers
Word rulers do more than measure. The horizontal ruler above the document shows the length of the typing line and lets you quickly adjust left and right margins and indents, set tabs, and change column widths. The vertical ruler along the left edge of the document lets you adjust top and bottom margins and change table row heights. You can hide the rulers to get more room for your document. As you work with long documents, use the document map to jump to any heading in your document. Headings are in the left pane and documents in the right.
Show and Hide the Rulers
- Click the View tab.
- Select or clear the Ruler check box.
TIMESAVERClick the View Ruler button at the top of the vertical scroll bar.
- To view the horizontal ruler, click the Web Layout View or Draft View button.
- To view the horizontal and vertical rulers, click the Print Layout View button.

MS Word shows a horizontal and a vertical ruler that it uses to align margins, paragraphs, images, tables, etc. This ruler can be customized and played with by the user in many ways. I use it extensively in formatting my documents.
However, I use MS Word 2007 where the ruler unit is in inches by default (refer the image below). And somehow I am not comfortable with the inches scale.
So, I considered changing the units to Centimeters. If you have similar intent, follow the two steps elaborated below:-
Step 1: Open MS Word and navigate to File -> Word Options.
Step 2: On the Word Options window, switch to the Advanced tab (on the left pane). Scroll to the section for Display and choose the desired unit from the drop down placed against the option reading Show measurements in units of. Click on Ok when done.
That’s it. You now have a ruler showing the unit that you find easy to work with. Here is mine that reads in cm.
Don’t see the ruler? You can activate it by navigating to View tab. Tick mark Ruler on the Show/Hide section.Image Credit: Biking Nikon
